The benefits of making science accessible
One of the goals of "Stars on Earth" is to raise awareness and train the people involved in the project. For this purpose, Doctor Erika Labbé, head of communications at the Diego Portales University (Chile) and active in the development and dissemination of inclusive astronomy projects since 2015, was invited.
Erika held a seminar on her experience on December 15, 2023 and then prepared a workshop for department staff on December 18 and 19, 2023.
These events, organized in collaboration with INFN Padua Section, were attended by experts from the Hollman Foundation and the president of the UICI section of Padua, who provided valuable insights from a person with visual impairment
The advantages of making science accessible

At first it was a science communication challenge; now it is a way of life. Making science accessible to people with disabilities has potential beyond social responsibility or empathy. It is also about making diversity an integral part of scientific development, incorporating people full of curiosity with new approaches to tackling problems. We propose to start by revising our perceptions of disability, giving people with disabilities and those involved in their education and care an opportunity to tell us about them, and opening our minds to new ways of doing science. Inclusive astronomy pushes us to be creative, to network, and to collaborate in interdisciplinary ways. We hope that this initiative will expand to other areas of scientific research.
