At the Poleni Museum: an international and inclusive exhibition
An international and inclusive exhibition: this is how the exhibition "Models. Knowledge in Three Dimensions" has been presented since October at the Poleni Museum of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Padua.
International because the exhibition panels are now available in seven different languages besides Italian, an absolute novelty. The languages offered are Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, Urdu, Persian, and English. The exhibition will thus be able to welcome University of Padua students from various countries, tourists, and especially the numerous foreign people who have been residing in Padua for some time or have just arrived. The translations were curated by students and PhD candidates from the University itself.
Inclusive, then, the exhibition is thanks to multiple innovations realized by the University Center for Museums: various Italian Sign Language (LIS) videos are available for the different sections of the exhibition, audio descriptions for blind and visually impaired people, a guide in easy-to-read and understand language, and captions in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). All these aids, as well as translations in various languages, are available via QR code on an innovative platform developed for the occasion according to web accessibility principles (https://www.itinerariaccessibili.com/). Sensory bags with materials to accompany the visit of people with cognitive disabilities (social stories, communication cards, and anti-stress gadgets) are also available on-site, and tactile workshops with 3D models and relief drawings created together with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired will be offered. Through all these proposals, the Exhibition aims to open up to an increasingly wide and diverse audience, the audience that doesn't always feel comfortable in a museum due to visible and invisible barriers, whether social, cultural, physical, or cognitive.
